Scaffolder Jose Nelio Melim Nunes (24), of Trinity Road, committed the offences on 16 August last year when he allowed the teens to ride the orange Aprilla Sr Motard 50cc machine in Springfield Lane.
In a Magistrate’s Court hearing, Centenier David Webber said that a neighbour phoned the police at about 7.40 pm to report that a group of people were riding in the lane and causing a nuisance.
The police attended at about 8 pm and found a group of youths nearby at Springfield café car park. The court heard they were standing close to an orange moped registered to Nunes, who was there, but who denied it had been ridden.
The Centenier said that the manager of Springfield allowed the police to examine CCTV footage on 26 September, which showed that the moped had been used by two riders. Nunes was in the CCTV and he later confirmed that he had allowed the two riders to ride the bike without insurance or a licence.
He named the two drivers, who the court heard had been dealt with separately. The Centenier said that one of them was aged 15.
The defendant committed offences of driving without a licence and/or insurance in both 2014 and 2015. On the first occasion a probation order was imposed and on the second he was sentenced to community service and banned from driving.
Advocate Sarah Dale, defending, said that her client’s circumstances had improved significantly since then and he was in work and doing extremely well.
In handing down the court’s sentence, the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, said that the two people riding Nunes’ bike up and down the lane annoyed the neighbours so much they informed the police.
‘There were also vehicles using the lane at the time, as well as pedestrians, and had there been an accident, you would not have been insured,’ she said.
