Children’s charity changes its name

From today, Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity, which supports vulnerable young people, will be known as Brightly.

The charity, which was established in 1925 and raises funds to buy goods, services and life-enhancing experiences for children and young people in residential care, said that it has made the decision to ensure that Islanders understand the breadth of support it provides.

Steve Harvey, chief executive of the charity, said: ‘It has become very clear that if the charity remained as Brig-y-Don Children’s Charity, then the majority of people will continue to think that the charity just runs the children’s home Brig-y-Don House, which we ceased to do in 2009.

Deputy Susie Pinel, charity chairwoman, added: ‘It has been a hard decision to make, but vital for the future of the charity, as it will enable us to be better understood as we work to improve the lives of Jersey’s most vulnerable children and young people.’

The decision to rebrand came following a consultation which asked Islanders their views on what they believed the charity should focus its work on in the future.

Later this month the charity is due to undertake an Island-wide mail drop to about 43,000 households to inform Islanders about the rebrand.

Mr Harvey said: ‘Our main aim is to continue as a small charity, but one that can make a big difference, by both enhancing childhood and enabling independence.’
