The award, worth £1,000, was won by the Victoria College student, whose considerable success in the sport includes representing Jersey in the 2015 NatWest Island Games and winning the junior champion at last year’s Jersey Slalom Championships.
Henry is currently studying for his A-levels and says that the bursary will help him learn how to teach the sport to a new generation.
‘There are very few qualified windsurfing instructors in Jersey and I would like to gain an RYA qualification in order to teach young people windsurfing to RYA standard,’ Henry said.
‘I think this is an important issue because there is a large generation gap in the sport, from adults over 40 to my age of 17 and younger, as currently the only way to get into windsurfing is through either friends or family.
‘If I can obtain an RYA qualification it will enable a higher quality of teaching and therefore stimulate the growth of windsurfing in Jersey.’
The bursary, which is made in association with the Jersey branch of Swiss bank UBS, will cover his course fees at the Galloway Activity Centre in Scotland as well as travel expenses. It will also help him with the cost of competing in national events such as the Tiree and Cornwall Wave Classics later this year.
Trustees from Jersey Clipper Bursary also presented a runner’s-up award of £500 to 19-year-old Hannah Behan to help fund the cost of her forthcoming ocean voyage aboard the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Tenacious.
Hannah (19), a former dinghy sailor and instructor at St Catherine’s Sailing Club, is currently taking a gap year before going to university in Sweden to study mathematics. She will join Tenacious at the end of this month for a six-week voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from Antigua in the West Indies to Southampton.
‘While on the trip I will be completing the JST’s Leadership@Sea programme which includes modules ranging from sail setting and helming to the galley and engine room knowledge,’ said Hannah.
‘I decided that I would like to sail on a tall ship as I have a strong interest in sailing. I recently completed my RYA Day Skipper Theory and am hoping to do
the practical part of the course this summer.
‘I would especially like to sail on a tall ship as I have a relative who helped to build HMS Elephant, Nelson’s flagship in the Battle of Copenhagen, and would like to experience being on a similar vessel.’
The annual Jersey Clipper Bursary, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Race, was established in 2007 through Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS.
