JEP shortlisted for Front Page of the Year award

The edition which impressed the judges was published on 17 July last year, a few weeks after the release of the findings of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry and contained harrowing accounts of those who endured abuse over a number of decades.

It featured the headline ‘The stories that every Islander should read’ and, using a stark and simple ‘white-out-of-black’ design, spoke directly to the reader in echoing the words of the inquiry panel chairwoman Frances Oldham QC.

The JEP front page is up against those produced by regional daily newspapers across Britain, two of which were published in the wake of the terrorist suicide-bomb attack on the Manchester Arena

JEP Editor Andy Sibcy said: ‘It is always good to have your work recognised and praised by peers within the industry. This was a huge news story for the Island and required front-page treatment which conveyed the seriousness and importance of the accounts inside without sensationalising them in an inappropriate way. I think we achieved that balance.’

He added: ‘The findings of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry sent a shock-wave through the Island community. For years, safeguarding failures had left children open to abuse in places where they were shown no love or kindness.

‘The newspaper reported in depth on the inquiry and its findings. Many of the testimonies included in a special pull-out were very disturbing.

‘However, Mrs Oldham said that every Islander should read the survivors’ stories to ensure that the community faced up to a difficult past and to underline the need for change. It was crucial that we used our reach to help make that a reality.’
