Deportation warning for driver who was five times over limit

Gabriel Eugenio Clemente Esteves (53), of St Saviour’s Road, was told by a judge in the Magistrate’s Court that he would consider recommending deportation during a sentencing hearing later this month.

The court heard that it was the second time in four years that the defendant had pleaded guilty to a high-level drink-drive charge.

When breathalysed following his latest offence, committed in Cattle Street and James Street on 27 March, Esteves gave a reading of 175 mcg in 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 mcg.

Esteves is also due to be sentenced for careless driving, failing to stop and report an accident and failing to comply with a traffic-light signal.

The Assistant Magistrate, Peter Harris, said: ‘The offences for which you are to be sentenced are serious ones and you had a similar drink-drive conviction four years ago.

‘Because of the circumstances of these two convictions, I wish to consider whether or not you should be deported from the Island after your sentence has been completed.’

Mr Harris told the defendant that he was at high risk of going to prison due to the extremely high level of alcohol involved and the other offences he had committed.

The case was adjourned until 16 May to allow the defendant’s lawyer to consider the matter and Esteves was told he would receive a letter in relation to possible deportation.
