The women officially took up the positions following a passing-out ceremony in front of their family, friends and senior prison staff, as well as Home Affairs Minister Kristina Moore, at Communicare in St Brelade last week.
The new recruits are Deborah McCance, Ashley Goodwin, Victoria Aley, Kirsten Park, Stephanie Da Silva and Lauren Quemard, who have all become prison operations officers, and Kathryn Mills, who is due to start work as a full-time nurse/health care officer.
Operations officers are responsible for managing the control room, the gatehouse, external and internal security patrols and external prisoner escorts.
As part of a bonding exercise, the team, who completed nine weeks of training, abseiled down Noirmont Point two weeks ago with support from the Fire and Rescue Service, raising more than £2,000 for the servicemen and veterans charity Rock2Recovery.
La Moye prison governor Bill Millar said that he was ‘confident’ that the new recruits would all ‘do well’ in their new responsibilities after performing well during training.
‘They have proved to be an excellent group to work with and all of them rose to every challenge they faced, producing consistently good results throughout their training,’ he said. ‘I would like to congratulate all of them and welcome the seven new recruits to join the excellent and professional team working at La Moye.’
Ms McCance told the JEP last month that the prison held the all-female recruitment drive because it had lost several female staff due to retirement and other factors.
