GP accused of illegally authorising cremation

Dr Sian Karen Baudains (33), who is based at Windsor Medical Practice at the Lido Medical Centre in St Saviour’s Road, is alleged to have committed the offence on 7 December last year in St Saviour.

During a short hearing recently, Centenier Mike Byrne said that the charge was brought under Article 5 (2) of the Cremation (Jersey) Law 1953.

It is alleged that Dr Baudains (33) ‘wilfully made false representations that she had examined a deceased person and signed and uttered a false certificate in that regard with a view to procuring the cremation of the deceased person’.

The doctor, of Rue du Clos Fallu, St Martin, was charged at the States police headquarters on 1 May. The offence carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment. Dr Baudains, who was not represented in court, was released on bail and is due to return to court on 17 May.

According to her LinkedIn page, she has worked at Lido Medical Centre since January of last year, having previously worked for another local surgery.

A spokeswoman for Windsor confirmed that Dr Baudains still works at the
practice.
