Public warned to take care after spate of sea rescues

With the warm weather expected to continue into the weekend beachgoers are also reminded that the sea temperature is still only 10°C, and are being urged to let someone know where they are going and when they expect to come back.

The warning comes after the Fire and Rescue Service’s inshore lifeboat was launched to rescue two people who were stranded at Elizabeth Castle at about 5.45 pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters were also called to help ambulance crews near Grosnez around the same time after two climbers were swept off the cliff face by a rogue wave.

And as the incident was coming to a close, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service received a call about a possible sighting of a person stuck on La Rocco Tower.

An engine, which was at the Grosnez incident, was dispatched to allow crew members to attempt to get a sighting from the shoreline and to liaise with the caller while the inshore lifeboat was sent from headquarters.

However, upon arrival the crew was faced with large swell and 5 ft breaking waves.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said: ‘With light fading fast and without a definite sighting the decision was made to deploy our drone operators.

‘The drone was deployed in testing conditions and using the thermal-imaging camera carried out a search of the area.

‘After a thorough search of the area of La Rocco Tower using the drone, with nothing found the search was called off.’

The mercury soared to 24°C on Wednesday – well above the 13.7°C April average – making it warmer than Athens and a number of Italian coastal resorts. Forecasters predict temperatures are expected to remain warm over the weekend, reaching 23°C on Saturday.

Mr Ryan added: ‘As the summer looks like it has turned up for the weekend please be aware of the tide times to avoid being caught out and stranded somewhere.

‘The sea is still only 10°C so tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.’
