Crane operator (36) fined for possessing drugs at work party

Stuart James Paul (36), of St Lawrence, was caught in possession of the class A and class B drugs on Mont Les Vaux.

Centenier David Webber said that at 10.35 pm on Friday 16 December, the police received information that there was a man in possession of an illegal substance.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that officers approached the defendant and asked to conduct a drugs search. He immediately volunteered that he had white power in his wallet and a cannabis joint.

He said that he had paid £60 for the cocaine and the joint was given to him earlier in the day. The amounts were for personal use only.

Advocate Francesca Pinel, defending, said that Paul was candid with police and told them what drugs he had. She said that the amounts were half a gram of cannabis and just over half a gram of cocaine.

She said that the defendant was on a staff Christmas party and he only took drugs that day because he had been drinking alcohol.

The court heard that he was a man who had changed jobs in recent years from being a chef so that he could have more regular hours to spend time with his family.

However, the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw, said that in the past the defendant had been to the Royal Court for importing cannabis.

In sentencing, she made an order for the drugs to be destroyed.
