Digital firm’s green ‘living wall’ thought to be first in the Island

Switch Digital moved to its new premises in Hilgrove Street six months ago and as part of its
refurbishment the company last week opted for a feature wall that is not only striking, but also healthier for its 15 staff members.

Managing director Damon Eastwood said that the green wall, which is thought to be the first of its kind in Jersey, was designed to improve Switch Digital’s working environment.

‘It’s right in the heart of our open-plan office and hopefully it’s pumping out lots of oxygen,’ he said.

‘It should be good for the atmosphere and help keep everyone sharp and productive.

‘It’s got a great visual impact, it’s made everyone smile and there are lots of health benefits.’

The £5,000 wall was built and installed by UK company Green Matters. They created the modular construction at their base in Somerset before shipping it to Jersey and putting it in place on Wednesday last week.

Switch Digital also had to have special lamps installed to provide light for the foliage, which is comprised of standard UK house plants.

‘We did speak to several local architects and designers but no one had ever done something like this before so we found a UK company who were able to do it at a sensible price,’ said Mr Eastwood.

‘It’s only been in place for a few days but we’ve had an amazing response and a time-lapse video we put on Facebook has been very popular.

‘We think it’s the first of it’s kind in Jersey. It’s got a very clever watering system which we only have to fill up once a month and it has a life span of between five and seven years.

‘We already can’t imagine the office without it and it’s created a real buzz. It’s a real talking point.’
