New intake start nursing degree

Ten students have started the pre-registration nursing programme which enables Islanders to learn and gain experience in Jersey rather than having to train in the UK.

The degree course, which is run by the Health Department in conjunction with the University of Chester, has been offered in the Island since 2013.

This is the fifth cohort to embark on the course, which follows the same programme as other students in the UK and is endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Julie Mesny, head of nursing and midwifery education, said: ‘This is a three year degree programme that is great for growing local talent.

‘Since we started with the first cohort in 2013 we’ve seen those student nurses becoming registered nurses and they are now supporting the trainee nurses.

‘Recruitment of nurses is an issue generally [in the UK and Jersey] so we’re fortunate to fill the cohorts and grow our own nurses.’
