Beast from the East may be back this weekend

But like most sequels, it is unlikely to be as memorable as the first instalment.

Following several days of generally mild weather, the winds are expected to swing around to the east on Saturday, bringing a sudden drop in temperatures.

By Sunday, there will be the risk of sleet showers and the mercury is expected to rise no higher than 5°C.

But Jersey Met say it is too early to say how severe the weather will be, and a number of UK-based forecasters are predicting that the blast is unlikely to be as cold or long-lasting as the freezing weather of two weeks ago.

John Searson, Jersey Met’s principal meteorologist, said: ‘There are indications that colder air is coming our way again.

‘However, the computer models are showing there are many possible variations and it is too early to give any detail.’

Channel 4 weather presenter Liam Dutton tweeted that temperatures across Britain are likely to drop from Saturday.

‘Another burst of Siberian air may push westwards over Europe next weekend. It’s unlikely to be as intense or as prolonged as the last cold spell.

‘Nevertheless, it brings the possibility of snow [for the UK], frost and a late season chill back into the mix,’ he said in a post on the social media site.

The UK Met Office, which produces longer range forecasts, said the cold weather would become established next week and that although there was a lot of uncertainty over the outlook, it could continue after next week.

‘It may become rather cold for most, accentuated by the wind, with widespread frosts possible. Very uncertain into the following week, but with a high chance of colder than normal conditions,’ they said.
