Musical treat for mothers as choir goes live to the nation

The Musical Originals choir, under choral director Imgoen Nicolls, will perform contemporary classical works during the programme alongside adult chamber choir Voices of Hope, whom they first met in the final of the Choir of the Year competition in 2016.

The two choirs were nominated by BBC Radio 3 to represent the British Isles at last year’s international Let the Peoples Sing competition and both went on to represent the UK at the televised final in Helsinki, which was broadcast last October and streamed live around the world.

Choral director Imogen Nicholls said she was extremely proud of the choir.

‘That one of the best youth choirs in the country comes from the tiny community of Jersey is testament to the extraordinary amount of hard work and dedication shown by these young people to their singing,’ she said. ‘I hope that they will make their mums – and many other mums – proud and delighted on Mother’s Day’.

The award-winning group, comprising 37 young people aged from 11 to 18, is regarded as one of the best youth choirs in the country and currently holds the title of UK National Children’s Choir of the Year.

They were one of only four youth choirs worldwide to reach the final of the prestigious Let the Peoples Sing choral competition. An estimated audience of two million listened to that performance in Finland, and tomorrow’s broadcast will also be heard worldwide.

The youngest member of the choir, Lucinda Morgan, who was 11 on Saturday, said: ‘I am really excited to represent Jersey on Radio 3 but I am a bit nervous too, as we are singing very difficult contemporary music at the Sage and we need to concentrate hard to get it all right. The composer will be listening from Kansas City!’
