Fires damage homes, cars and shut surrounding roads

Crews were first called to Green Road in St Clement at around 7.20 am after a blaze, believed to have been caused by a tumble drier, started inside a garage.

Alan Heard, whose garden backs onto the affected property, said that emergency services arrived soon after he became aware there was an incident.

‘I heard quite a few bangs so I went and looked out the bedroom window and saw flames and smoke coming from our neighbour’s house behind our garden,’ he said. ‘The Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the same time that I actually became aware there was a fire happening.

‘The Vingtenier called at our door to tell us to keep our windows and doors shut and we let the fire service into our garden to give them access to the roof [of the affected house].

‘It was dealt with particularly quickly, they were here for about an hour. There is no roof there now and the inside is just full of burnt timbers.’

Then at around 11.30 am emergency services were called to an incident involving three cars on fire outside a house near Anne Port.

The homeowner is thought to have disconnected a battery charger from one of the vehicles shortly before it ignited, with flames spreading to a Mitsubishi 4×4 and a BMW. All three cars were severely damaged.

A gutter and fascia were also damaged but the blaze was put out before it could spread to the house.

Roads in the area were closed by police for around an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Green Road was also closed temporarily during the earlier incident.
