Russian dancers rescued by Jersey lifeboat crew

The trio, who were in Jersey for the Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet at the Jersey Opera House, had walked out to the castle on Tuesday afternoon and got cut off by the rising tide.

The dancers initially tried to walk back across the flooding causeway but realised that their route was too dangerous with the water rising rapidly and so turned back, cold and wet.

Finding that their phones were not working, they managed to raise the alarm by shouting and waving, and another member of the public phoned the Coastguard.

The Elizabeth Castle caretaker made sure the women were safe and they were picked up by volunteers training on the George Sullivan lifeboat.
