Elderly Army veteran praised for tackling Jersey house fire

The man used buckets of water to extinguish the blaze, which broke out in his conservatory in Trinity shortly before 10 pm on Wednesday.

Firefighters then cleared the property of smoke and the JEC attended to restore the electricity supply, which had been damaged in the fire.

The blaze is believed to have started in a food smoking machine that was left on for too long.

A Jersey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: ‘The elderly gentleman did amazingly well to extinguish the fire and he relied on the fire training he had received from his time in the Army.

‘I would advise people to get out stay out and call 999.’
