New owners take on Museum restaurant

The Merchant House Brasserie closed at the end of 2017 after being operated by Dolan Hotels since 2010. From March the concession will be run by the Tiffin Group, which has restaurants and cafés in the Island and the UK. It will be rebranded as the Museum Courtyard Bar and Bistro.

A new outlet will also be created within the museum called Expressions Café by Tiffin.

Jersey Heritage’s commercial operations director Jeremy Swetenham says the overall plan is to make the concourse an open plan area for events and meetings, as well as the point of entry for visitors.

The ticket desk and shop are being relocated next to the stairs and lift, and the glass walls that separated the restaurant from the concourse are being removed. The ceiling is being raised, and improved lighting installed to make the area brighter.

‘We are aiming to open in late March when we will launch an exhibition about the work of Jersey Overseas Aid,’ Mr Swetenham said.

‘We are looking to provide a space where guides and visitors to the Island can meet but we will still very much be offering a visitor centre experience where people can learn more about the Island.’

The Island’s tourist information centre, which moved to the concourse of the Jersey Museum in 2016, is not part of the plans. It was announced last year that it would be moving to the Liberation Station.

Jersey Museum is open during the refurbishment with the entrance and ticket desk relocated to the Link Corridor Gallery.
