In just 24 hours, scammers managed to steal £180,000 from members of the public through texts and emails asking people for their banking details.
Chief Inspector Chris Beechey, chairman of the Fraud Prevention Forum, said Islanders might be more easily duped into being tricked by scammers because Jersey was a safe and trusting place.
He said: ‘Living in Jersey we can too easily be overly trusting, believing that the Island is a safe place and that we are protected from frauds and scams. But this, sadly, is not always the case.
‘Before Christmas a number of Islanders were targeted by fraudsters in a banking scam. The combined total stolen was in excess of £217,000.’
Every Jersey home will soon receive a newsletter about scams and fraud and a roadshow is due to take place in King Street on Monday and Wednesday this week.
