Weather threatens New Year travel plans

All planned crossings of Liberation between Jersey, Guernsey and Poole were cancelled on Friday, with winds forecast to reach up to force eight on Friday afternoon and severe gale force nine by Friday evening.

Rapide, which sails between the Island and St Malo, was also due to run on a different schedule on Friday. The planned Friday 1.20 pm arrival from St Malo was rescheduled to come in at 5.50 pm, with the return service delayed from 2.15 pm to 6.35 pm.

And for Saturday, when winds are still forecast to be blowing at a force seven and up to 60 mph in the Channel, all fast-ferry services are under review.

In a statement published online, Condor Ferries said: ‘Whilst it is possible that the weather will moderate, this is not certain.’

Boat owners with vessels in the Elizabeth Marina are also being advised that due to forecast strong winds the storm gate is due to be closed from Friday until Sunday, when conditions will be reviewed.

On Wednesday, ferry services and flights into and out of the Island were also cancelled due to strong winds. Trees fell in most of the Island’s parishes and roads were blocked.

Meanwhile a hailstorm was reported in the west of the Island on Thursday afternoon.
