Waitrose store hopes to increase its parking

The company has applied for permission for a further 55 spaces on a plot of land at its St Saviour site, where there is currently a redundant warehouse.

If the plans are approved the number of parking spaces will increase from 113 to 168 and the work is expected to be complete by next spring.

The design statement, prepared by Waddington Architects, states: ‘Our clients would like to rationalise the site by demolishing an existing warehouse and increase the number of parking spaces but in a safer and better arrangement.

‘After being unsuccessful in finding tenants which had interest in renting the property it was concluded that: the premises are beyond their economic use as they are too large and of a poor specification, demand for this type of accommodation is very limited, it is not financially viable to redevelop the property to provide smaller, modern warehouse units and the premises are constrained by the nearby property uses – which include the Plat Douet primary school and neighbouring residential properties. The existing building is in a poor condition and has reached the end of its usual life.’

Subject to planning approval, all deliveries would continue from the Plat Douet road entrance and Waitrose has said it will review staff transport patterns as part of the application.
