Politicians approve hospital funding plans

A number of Members raised concerns about borrowing such a large sum as well as arguing that the building’s height, scale and accessibility could have a detrimental impact on St Helier.

However, almost a year after the funding proposals were first tabled by Treasury Minister Alan Maclean, the States ultimately agreed to borrow the money with the rest of the funds for the estimated £466 million project coming from the Island’s rainy day fund.

It means that, subject to planning permission being granted, the new hospital project can move forward to the next stage and Senator Maclean now has the authority to take out the multi-million bond.

The proposals were approved by 30 votes to 16.
