Town street bag snatch: Care worker fined after being found with phone

First offender Kelly Sarah Monet (27), of Hampshire Gardens, admitted criminally receiving, hiding or withholding the Samsung 7 mobile phone worth about £600.

Centenier Philip Coffey said that at about 2 pm on Sunday 10 September the victim had her handbag snatched as she walked along Poonah Road.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that police later identified a suspect, who was linked to the defendant.

The phone was recovered from Monet at her home when police went there on 4 October and they discovered she had used it since it was snatched.

The court was told that 0.4g of cannabis was also discovered in the lounge of Monet’s home and it was accepted that the amount involved was for personal use.

Advocate Hiran Mistry, defending, said Monet fully understood the legal implications of her actions.

He told the court that his client worked at Silver Springs nursing and care home and that her employment was not at risk.

The Magistrate Bridget Shaw said to Monet: ‘This is an offence where you received a financial advantage. It was not your phone to use.’
