I’m a teacher… get me out of here!

Fifteen teachers from all five school houses popped crunchy bugs into their mouths in front of dozens of pupils in a Bushtucker Trial-style event similar to the one that stars on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here have to contend with.

Five pupils, one from each house, put themselves forward to drink a cup of ‘cockroach milkshake’ which, unbeknown to them, was in fact a concoction of milk, porridge and chocolate drops.

Children who wanted to watch the eating challenge had to pay £1 to enter the hall. More than £300 was raised for Jersey Alzheimer’s Association and Barnardo’s.

Adam Grocott, a maths teacher at the school, managed to gulp down a small glassful of worms and polished off a locust.

He said: ‘The locust was rough, dry and bitty. The worst bit was that some of the wing got stuck in the back of my throat and that made me gag. I’m so bad at swallowing stuff so it’s amazing I got them both down.’

The winners of the challenge were Orgueil house, whose teachers finished eating the insects the quickest.

Staff and pupils also paid £2 to wear Christmas-themed outfits during the day – this money
was split between the school’s minibus appeal, Jersey Alzheimer’s Association and Barnardo’s.

The school believe they have raised close to £1,000 in total.
