First charity signs up for diversity accreditation

The DIFERA – diversity, inclusion, fairness, equality, respect and acceptance – scheme was created by Liberate, the Channel Islands charity which promotes equality and diversity.

Launched in May, the scheme sets a quality benchmark for organisations and means companies are audited to see where they are in terms of having a diverse workforce.

Any organisations signing up to the scheme ask their staff to complete an anonymous questionnaire. Responses from the questionnaire are then used to make any improvements needed.

Emelita Robbins, the chief executive at Jersey Hospice Care, said: ‘Jersey Hospice Care recognise and appreciate all of the differences that make each of us unique.

‘Upholding a culture of inclusion, one that fosters the values of DIFERA, is critical to our organisation, where treating people with respect is a fundamental principle guiding everything we do. In embracing a diversity of views and experience, I believe we attract and retain the best staff and volunteers and, I hope, enable everyone to feel part of the Jersey Hospice Care community.

‘Importantly, in this way, I also believe we are able to deliver the best care to every Islander who accesses our services. I hope our membership of the DIFERA scheme encourages others to adopt it.’
