School lays 36,000 bricks – to create a Lego logo

But students at Grainville School have now built a Lego model of their school logo – using 36,000 bricks.

The day-long workshop for Year 9 was run by the school and First Names – an organisation which supports pupils across the British Isles by running leadership and training events.

Assistant head teacher James Bennett said that this was the first time that the school had given pupils the chance to take part in such an event.

‘The idea of the day is to teach the students about the values of leadership through various team-building exercises, ending with all 150 Year 9s coming together to build the school logo using only Lego,’ he added.

Before the event maths teacher and self-confessed Lego fan Adam Grocott travelled to Bright Bricks – the fourth-largest model workshop in the world, which has been commissioned to build large Lego sculptures by companies such as Disney – to train as a ‘Bright Bricks Lego facilitator’. His training was paid for by First Names.

Mr Grocott said he was really pleased with how enthusiastic Bright Bricks had been when he approached them with the idea of creating the school’s logo and added that his training had involved covering various topics such as ‘orientation and accurate placement’ of bricks.

‘The experience of seeing what goes into building the sculptures was really eye-opening – very different to what myself and my wife build in the living room at home,’ he said.

Pupil Davy Williams said: ‘I really liked how we all came together today. It’s been an exciting day.’

Millie Crowder said that she was not a massive Lego fan but added: ‘The day was really fun.’
