£137k in lottery profits given to local charities

Each year the Association receives the Jersey portion of the Channel Islands’ lottery profits from the Economic Development Minister to distribute to its members specifically for the benefit of the people and Island.

A total of £137,036.82 has now been distributed to seven charities, including Music in Action which received £24,900 for a development manager salary and an educational programme and Jersey Child Care Trust which was granted £2,820 for training costs.

Meanwhile, the Jersey Council on Alcoholism received £30,000 to go towards refurbishing its nine-bed secondary bed facility – a facility for clients who have completed the primary 12-step programme – at Westpark Avenue.

Jason Wyse, chief executive, said: ‘The funding we get from the association is invaluable and we are so grateful for their help. The money has meant we can refurbish our secondary facility which acts as a bridge to normal life for our clients. It allows people to continue their treatment while regaining independence and rebuilding their lives.’

He added: ‘The facility is unique as it’s the only rehab for addiction of its kind in the Channel Islands.’

Lymphoedema Jersey was given £24,000 to pay a therapist’s salary for two years.

Honorary secretary Jane Unwin said: ‘We do not get any funding from the States whatsoever. The only way we can pay our therapist’s salary is through our own fundraising and the grant from the association.’

The Association of Jersey Charities has 313 member charities ranging from large organisations providing essential services to the community, local branches of national charities and smaller local charities, organisations, clubs and societies.

Lyn Wilton from the Association said: ‘Charities are selected based on evidence they provide detailing the need for the project, the benefit to Jersey and its residents and that the money is for charitable use.’

Le Congres received £30,000 to pay for the salary of a Jèrriais teacher, Jersey Marine Conservation was given £15,368.82 to purchase a RIB and Jersey Heritage Trust was granted £9,948 to produce a Peace Trail guide and videos.
