Sark visitor ‘scarred for life’ in dog attack

Phil Taylor needed emergency surgery and was left with 40 stitches in his face after the bull mastiff bit him at the Bel Air Inn.

The 57-year-old said he thought he was dying as blood poured out of his cheek and mouth.

The incident happened last Saturday shortly before Mr Taylor and three friends were due to return to Guernsey.

He told how the group had eaten lunch at the pub before walking around the island and having a few drinks at another bar.

They returned to the Bel Air and one of his friends patted the dog, which was under a table, but when Mr Taylor went to stroke it, the animal lurched forward and bit him.

‘It was like it was a different animal,’ he said. ‘There was blood squirting everywhere. I said “I’m dying”.

‘People were telling me to sit down. Friends were trying to stop the blood and the bar man kept bringing out tea towels. I was in a daze.’

Mr Taylor was transferred to Guernsey on the Flying Christine marine ambulance and underwent emergency surgery.

It was initially feared he may have to be transferred to Southampton, but the surgery was a success and he was discharged on Tuesday. Mr Taylor is now calling for the dog to be put down.

‘Once a dog has done it once, then they can do it again. If you can’t even pat the dog, then there is a problem,’ he said.

Sark Constable Glenn Williams said that the island’s constables were investigating the matter with the help of Guernsey Police but that they could not comment further.
