Wife of former governor has died

Nancy Whiteley died on 24 August in Devon, where the couple had made their home after leaving Jersey. Sir Peter, who died last year aged 95, served the Island between 1979 and 1984 and was the first former Royal Marine to hold the post.

Mrs Whiteley, née Clayden, had personal connections with Jersey before moving here, having visited the Island numerous times over 50 years, first with her family and then with the couple’s four children as their own family grew.

When they left Jersey the couple were credited by the JEP as having ‘rejuvenated the role of Lieutenant-Governor with an energetic modern approach and a breadth of involvement in all aspects of today’s Jersey.’
