Silver lining for Island photographer

For Sue Trower FRPS, it was the fulfilment of an ambition that began when she started as a licentiate member in 2012, and progressed to associate level the following year.

As well as being granted the Fellowship, Sue has also picked up numerous awards for her work, including at the Jersey Eisteddfod and at national competitions.

Much of her work is inspired by the Island’s coastline, cliff tops and sandy beaches, as well as her travels abroad. She also likes to work in monochrome and her Silver Lining collection formed part of the successful submission to the RPS.

Sue has been interested in photography since she was 14 years old and was given her first camera by her father – in the days before digital cameras had taken over. ‘I was always snapping away. Everything was done in the in the darkroom in those days. And I remember going to Boots to get my film printed,’ she said. It wasn’t until years later, however, that Sue bought her first digital camera, which she said ‘changed everything’.

She now uses a Canon 5D Mark IV with a variety of lenses and her images are processed through Adobe Creative Cloud on an Apple Mac computer.

To be granted the Fellowship, Sue had to submit a panel of 21 photographs, as well as a statement of intent, which then went through two assessment boards and the RPS council.

After achieving her aim, Sue is now considering where her photography will take her next. ‘I’m sitting back and enjoying it at the moment. Gaining the fellowship wasn’t easy and I got rejected a couple a couple of times. And as it was all done from afar, you don’t have a say and you have to present everything by post.

‘But it was all worth it in the end.’ Sue is not a professional photographer, but her prints are available to buy.
