Jersey's current population revealed

According to a States Statistics Unit report, the population increased by 1,500 last year.

Net inward migration - the difference between the number of people settling in Jersey and the number leaving - accounted for 1,300.

The remaining 200 was natural charge – the number of births minus deaths.

The net inward migration figure was slightly less than that of 2015, which was the highest level for 15 years (1,500 people).

During the last ten years, Jersey's population has increased by 11,900 – 75 per cent of which was due to net inward migration.

How the figure was calculated:

In 2011, the Jersey Census put the total population at 97,857. This provided a base line for future population estimates. So, the change in the population each year is estimated using data on the number of births and deaths, information on school and pre-school populations and employment data.
