Condor reviews procedures after harbour collision

The fast ferry struck the pontoon at low speed on the afternoon of 3 May while manoeuvring following a crossing from Jersey. No one was injured.

The Liberation suffered minor damage but was cleared to continue its journey to Poole following a one-hour delay.

A report produced by Condor and Guernsey’s harbour authorities found that the collision occurred following ‘an initial positioning error’ during the approach to where the vessel is turned inside the port.

It concluded that although the ‘position was not unreasonable given the wind conditions on the day, it did lead to a sequence of actions that resulted in the incident’.

The Liberation struck the pontoon after the master worked to ensure the ship did not collide with the Victor Hugo ferry which had already berthed.

Following the accident, the master undertook a review of his own notes regarding the marks and identification of no-go areas as well as contingency plans. He also conducted a period of duty with an additional master sailing in support.

The scenario will also be added to simulator training.

Additional training for crew members who report distances to the bridge will also be provided and the company will review the position of navigational aids on each bridge wing.
