Musicians get by with a little help from a mysterious friend

But the band has managed to get by with a little help from a mysterious friend who squared things away with music company Sony to allow the group to issue the cover.

The JEP reported in March that the Jersey Norman-French band did not have permission from Sony – who own the rights to the original song – to release a cover version of ‘With a Little Help from my Friends’, featuring the Les Amis Choir.

The band believes that following the publication of the article, an unknown individual within the American record company managed to arrange the appropriate contract.

Kit Ashton, the lead singer of the band, said that he had attempted to write to rock legend Sir Paul McCartney to resolve the issue, but did not receive any response.

He said: ‘It is a bit of a mystery to be honest, but whatever the details are we are over the moon about it.

‘I had tried writing to Sir Paul McCartney but had no joy – then out of the blue I got an email from Sony offering us a contract. I could not believe it, but there it was. We were all completely delighted of course.’

Mr Ashton believes that the U-turn happened after Jersey-based musician, manager and promoter Niall Mac, owner of Stoked Music, got in touch with a Sony employee over the matter. The singer said Mr Mac read the JEP article and decided to get in touch with a contact at Sony who said they would ‘see what they could do’.

A new release date for the single is due to be confirmed by the end of the month.
