Swarm of bees descends on garage forecourt

Staff at Bel Royal Motors got a surprise on Tuesday afternoon when a swarm of bees took a fancy to a Mazda 6.

Alan Osmand, the company’s managing director, said: ‘They arrived within the space of about ten minutes. I reckon there were probably about 10,000 of them.’

Swarming – the process by which a queen and a large number of worker bees leave a hive to form a new colony – is common during this time of the year.

Beekeeper Bob Tompkins urged anyone who sees a swarm to contact the Environment Department, their parish hall or the Jersey Beekeepers Association.

‘We were contacted very quickly about this one and were able to deal with it very quickly,’ said Mr Tompkins.’
