Field Squadron is struggling to recruit

As a result Major Charlie Montgomery says the JFS is mounting a major recruitment drive to boost its numbers. On Saturday it was due to hold a recruitment open day until 3 pm at the barracks at Le Quesne Barracks at La Collette.

He said: ‘I’ve been really impressed with the community spirit here and how everyone gets stuck in for good causes – it’s a really positive atmosphere in Jersey and something you don’t see so much of in the UK.

‘That’s one of the reasons why we’ve been struggling to recruit because there’s so much going on – there are so many other ways in which people can commit to their community here.

‘But we are trying to push on and recruit as many people as possible.’

The Royal Engineers’ Jersey Field Squadron is one of four squadrons which make up the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers militia.

The JFS has more than 50 volunteer reservists, and Major Montgomery says there is capacity for 77.

‘We are actively looking for more reservists. If you are a manager of a business you can bring people in to take up roles at many different levels from the get-go,’ said Major Montgomery.
