Woman who was assault victim hid in cupboard

The defendant, who has a string of previous convictions for violence, pushed a woman to the floor in her own home. Just over two months later, he attacked a second woman in his flat, striking her in the face and causing a cut to her cheek. He also grabbed her by the collar, causing bruising around her neck.

He admitted one count of assault, one of grave and criminal assault and one of resisting arrest. He was jailed for 21 months.

The Royal Court heard that during the grave and criminal assault the 37-year-old had left his victim so terrified she hid in a cupboard and emerged only after the police, who had been called after a neighbour heard shouting and screaming coming from the defendant’s apartment, arrived.

Delivering the court’s sentence, the Bailiff, William Bailhache, said: ‘You need to learn some respect for women and the fact that these assaults are committed on women is something the court takes very seriously.
