Jersey Zoo to return

Founded as Jersey Zoo in 1959 by Gerald Durrell, the park changed its name due to the ‘negative connotations’ associated with the word zoo.

However, the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust say that from Monday 3 April, the Trinity park will once again be known as Jersey Zoo.

Dr Lee Durrell, honorary director, said: ‘Putting zoo back into Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is something I welcome, for it reinforces what Gerald Durrell had been working towards all his life – to ensure that zoos are genuine and powerful instruments for conservation.

Dr Leslie Dickie, chief executive of Durrell, added that the name change would make the zoo more recognisable for visitors as well as ‘staying true to the wishes of our founder’.
