Domestic abuse unit ‘needs Portuguese speaker’

Last year officers were called to more than 1,000 domestic abuse incidents, leading to 311 investigations.

In each case, the victim is met by an independent domestic violence adviser as part of a scheme which is run by a number of agencies, including the States police and the Jersey Domestic Abuse Forum.

The advisers, who work independently of the police and offer confidential support to victims, have dealt with more than 700 high-risk cases of abuse since the service was formed in 2014.

Detective Inspector Mark Hafey, the head of the Public Protection Unit, said: ‘The IDVA service is open to all of Jersey’s community. However, we acknowledge that language can be a particularly challenging barrier in certain circumstances.’

This Friday, staff from the police, the Jersey Women’s Refuge, the Youth Service and IDVAs will be talking to members of the public about the campaign outside Boots in Halkett Street and Jack Wills in Brook Street.
