Members reject move to change voting systems

Reform Jersey politician Deputy Montfort Tadier lodged a proposal earlier this year requesting that the Privileges and Procedures Committee – who oversee electoral reform and the workings of the States – formulate plans to bring in a single transferable vote and alternative vote system.

Although his proposition called for plans for STV and AV to be brought in time for the 2018 election, he accepted an amendment from the PPC, who suggested that the public should instead be consulted about the change by the summer of next year, with a report delivered to the Assembly before the end of 2017.

However, following a debate on the proposed consultation, Members rejected the proposition, with 22 in favour and 24 against.
