Senator Sarah Ferguson said that increased pressure on the Island’s housing stock and public services will outweigh the economic benefits of immigration unless workers coming to Jersey are earning above the income tax exemption threshold.

Last year net migration to the Island was 1,500 people, well above the forecast figure of 325.

Ministers have said that immigration is needed to increase tax receipts and that it supports public services.

They have warned that pressure will increase on public services in the future as the size of Jersey’s elderly population increases.
