Inflation hits highest level since end of 2012

Jersey’s Retail Price Index, which measures rising price levels in the Island, was two per cent for the year up to 30 September 2016 – the highest rate recorded since December 2012.

The RPI is measured by sampling a variety of goods and services in an ‘average shopping basket’.

The biggest driver of increasing prices was household services, such as school fees and telephone charges, which rose by three per cent during the period.

Motoring costs, including the cost of petrol and diesel, also rose sharply, rising by two per cent over the year.

The Jersey Index of Average Earnings report, which was released earlier this year, showed the average wage in the Island increased by 2.1 per cent between June 2015 and 2016 – slightly more than the current RPI.
