Nepal leprosy charity thanks Islanders for help fighting disease

Shovakhar Kandel, national director of The Leprosy Mission (TLM) Nepal, first visited Jersey last year to speak about the charity’s work in battling leprosy in his home country.

His visit coincided with the devastating earthquake in the south-Asian country which killed almost 9,000 people.

Mr Kandel also said that he had Islanders to thank for keeping him in a positive mindset as he waited to find out whether his wife and two daughters had survived the quake.

Jersey Side by Side immediately donated £12,000 to help deal with the earthquake devastation and disease, and has since raised almost £20,000 as part of a fundraising target of £33,000 for its Nepal project.
