Cars, cars and more cars – so what’s the answer?

And recently Islanders’ love of their own cars was confirmed when it was revealed that the States had achieved just a 1.6 per cent reduction in peak-time traffic – well short of their 15 per cent target.

Over the years, politicians and other Islanders have put forward a range of options for enticing people out of their cars, including improving bus routes, creating more cycle lanes and even introducing a London-style congestion charge.

According to the Environment in Figures report published earlier this month, a study found that 11,900 cars pass through town between 7.30 am and 9.30 am, and although the States have made efforts to improve bus services and cycle routes, Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel has said it will be hard to change the attitudes of Islanders.
