Red tape on home CCTV to be lifted

The new provision comes as part of a series of changes announced by Environment Minister Steve Luce, who pledged to review permitted development rights when he became a minister in 2014.

Under the revised law, which is currently being drafted, those who want to place CCTV cameras at their properties may only use the devices to film within the boundaries of the land on which the camera sits, meaning householders will not be permitted to record footage of neighbouring homes or gardens.

Deputy Luce’s revisions also include allowing the building of temporary, open-sided field shelters for livestock, and the installation of retractable awnings at the back of houses and flats on the ground floor without planning permission.
