Thief threatened shop assistant with penknife

The regular offender, of no fixed address, admitted going into Mountain Warehouse on the afternoon of 11 September and stealing a coat, five torches, insect repellent and the penknife, valued at a total of nearly £200.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that when challenged by the shop assistant, the defendant threatened him with the knife.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris explained to the 35-year-old offender that even though there was no actual contact with the victim, the threat of using the knife was enough to constitute assault.

In addition to the theft from Mountain Warehouse, the accused also admitted stealing a sports bag valued at £40 from the nearby Jack Wills store.
