Recovery companies were called out for a number of reasons, such as needing to impound vehicles because they were in a dangerous condition or because they needed to be towed away following a serious road crash.
According to a Freedom of Information request, 387 vehicles were recovered by private companies in 2015.
And between January and August this year, 216 vehicles were moved at the request of the police.
