UK murder case work ‘is helping Jersey police’

Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull, head of crime services for the States police, was the senior investigating officer in the case of so-called Suffolk Strangler Steve Wright in the mid-2000s.

Wright strangled five women, all of whom were street prostitutes, over several months in 2006.

Before moving to Jersey in 2011, Det Supt Gull was in charge of that case, codenamed Operation Sumac, which lead to Wright being jailed for life in 2008.

In 2014, the States police launched an investigation into whether women were being trafficked to the Island and sold for sex.

The States police’s prostitution inquiry, codenamed Operation Phoenix, remains active and Det Supt Gull said his previous experience in Suffolk has given him a ‘broader insight into prostitution’.
