Call to reject sports facility in green zone

The scheme, which is being led by former Jersey RFC director of rugby Ben Harvey, is due to be discussed at this month’s planning meeting on Thursday.

If approved, the multi-million-pound structure proposed for development on land off the Airport Road, would include state-of-the-art facilities for élite athletes, sports clubs and schools.

Mr Harvey’s plans outline how the facility would be open from 6.30 am to 9.30 pm seven days a week except on Jersey RFC Saturday match days and the building, which would be called the Jersey Sports Academy, has received support from the Island’s sportsmen and women, physicians, schools and sports clubs.

However, the Planning Department has recommended that the plans be rejected on the grounds that the application does not sufficiently justify departing from policy to allow building in the green zone.
