Daily checks after crab invasion

Last month large breeding colonies of Asian crabs were discovered on the east coast and on Monday the Environment Department confirmed the first sighting of the Asian hornet at Mount Bingham.

Yesterday an agricultural inspector was investigating a potential second sighting of the insect in the area, after the department received a call from a member of the public.

Special traps to establish if the Asian hornet, which poses a serious threat to the Island’s honey bees, are more widespread have been placed at key locations.
