Public pulls plug on town street market

With support from the Infrastructure Department, the Parish of St Helier was given the go-ahead to hold a Sunday market in Broad Street and to close the road between 10 am and 4 pm every Sunday up to 18 September.

However, Daphne East, the town centre manager, said that the market, which sold a range of crafts, food, drinks and other Jersey products, lost momentum a few weeks after it was first held, on 22 May, and has had to close due to a lack of interest from Islanders.

The closure of the market is the latest setback to the commercial sector in St Helier, with the BHS store in King Street and the Austin Reed shop in Halkett Street both set to close after those companies went into administration earlier this year.
