States spend more than £22,000 on consultants’ flights in past three years

However, the six departments that typically use the most consultants – Chief Minister’s, Infrastructure, Environment, Economic Development, Health and the Treasury – have refused to release the information, saying it would take too long to compile.

As a result the true cost of what the government spends flying consultants to the Island from outside Jersey remains unknown – this is on top of what the States spends on travel and accommodation for its own staff – estimated to be around £3 million per year.

That cost has recently come under close scrutiny after this newspaper revealed that Economic Development chief executive Mike King and Locate Jersey’s Wayne Gallichan had spent almost £13,000 of taxpayers’ money on fully flexible business-class tickets to South Africa for a mining conference.
